1  Worldwide Coins & Bank Notes / U.S. Coins / Re: SILVER GONE NUTS on: April 16, 2011, 10:18:55 PM
Silver has done well. I've been a silver nut for many decades and have hoarded silver when it was still in circulation. My wedding band is white gold because I didn't like the gold color. Now I'm not against gold, I have some, but silver being a 'poor man's gold', is affordable to all to add to their accumulation.

I purchased a new S U V a yr ago. 'Somehow', while the papers were being filled out, the discussion turned to COINS. The saleman then mentioned that his folks left him 'a ton of coins'......."....old dimes, quarters, halves, and around 20 silver dollars". Well, after a year, I get a call from him asking me to evaluate those coins and that he wondered if I wanted them. I'll be meeting him this coming Wednesday night at the auto dealership after 5PM. Silver coins are now worth 31 times their face value. Approx. how much should I offer the guy times face value? The way he talked, he has around $150 face value. I'm talking about a fair value for both of us.

Thank you Nancy for the information. Now I have another coin to find to send to a grandkid. She lives in Montana and for the last several yrs I've sent her "Horsey" coins. She's only 11 now, gets 2 'Horse' publications a month, and because of her vast  interest/knowledge of horses, a neighbor just gave her a horse.

That coin is GREAT!! I'm curious though, what does the Unicorn on the reverse represent?

To me, that is a mighty nice coin.....any coin with a Queen on it. My favorite? The British/India issues of the 1840s one Rupee coin.

Yes, Great Britain has a similar design.....Guernsey is a British crown dependency and some of the 8 doubles were minted in Birmingham. (The Guernesy doubles coins are one of my favorite coins to collect.)

Steve, the Estonian coin (3 Lions on a Sheild) look almost exactly like the obverses of the 1834-1911 8 Doubles coins of Guernsey. How are the countries related?

Thanks for the correct info.

Thanks Terry, I never thought of that.....BUT, weren't aluminum 1964 dollars/patterns minted (JFK-?) and passed around congress.....in which some weren't returned? (It figures.) I think Dan's going to run into a little trouble on this coin IF anyone tries to spend it. Of course, who would use a $100+ coin for a $1 purchase? Maybe kids raiding their parent's collection?

EG, I have Unc rolls of the Alaskan and Hawaii state quarters. Surely there must be a 'Winner' in the rolls. Sadly, I'm a little illiterate in picture taking and posting of pics on the net. I am now being taught by a computer 'geek' from a state college where I live......he's a student and when he sometimes informed his teacher how to do things, the college hired him part time to solve the college's computer problems.  Goose
