I received a letter today from the Perth Mint dated 8 February 2008, informing me that I was one of the ballots selected to receive one of the limited edition (3,000) 2008 Gilded Kookaburras.

All I had to do was pay for it and the postage prior to 7 March 2008 -
thats 4 days away.

Now for the fun -The price is in Australian Dollars- what else, but the postage is only listed as the amount to post the coin within Australia.

Now what mad me suspicious was the letter came in an envelope with Singaporean postage on it and the return address was in Singapore.

Knowing all the fake coins out there  - I was not positive as what to do

answer
I called the Perth Mint.

They have no idea how the letter came from Singapore or why it had a return address in Singapore.

I have been asked to send the envelope back to them for them to investigate.

and they are sending me the coin at the posted price and not charging me for international shipping since they posted the domestic letter and prices internationally.

Now I have had lots of experience with Australia Post and the US post office screwing things up, but I have never received a letter where the return address and postage were covered with replacement postage and return addresses  from another country.

Anyone have any ideas?

I think the Mint tried to do bulk mailing from Singapore and got caught!

I think you are right Richard.

I am happy for you that you will get the coin.  Should be quite a treasure.

Well I can't imagine the Perth Mint subcontracting a letter as that would be giving out coin collectors addresses all over the world, now wouldn't it? In my mind the concern would be how these individuals in Singapore got my address and the knowledge I collected Australian coins?
One thing is for sure somethings stinks here. And you say the return postage was already on the return envelope? I sure hope the Perth Mint can track this one down for you as you may have done a whole lot of world wide collectors a huge favor by bringing this to the attention of Australian authorities.
