Welcome to a stroll down memory lane... Looks a lot different, HUH?

Title: Presidential dollars...UGLY!
Post by: AdamL on January 03, 2008, 06:28:12 AM
I was looking at the January 8th issue of Numismatic News today. The 2008 designs are shown on the cover. They look hideous!! Not sure if I spelled that right. What do yall think?

I think you've spelled "hideous" correctly. ::)

Oh. you mean the dollars.  :D

US Mint site - dollar release schedule (http://www.usmint.gov/mint_programs/$1coin/?action=schedule).

Hmmm. Let's just say, those guys were lucky the US Mint didn't design their election posters. Otherwise, we might have been putting the other guy's pictures on those coins.

Well....I do not know about hideous....but they definatley have a serious look on there faces.

If that is the way they looked then we just have to accept it.

I for one will still collect them.

Only attractive females belong on coins, not pickled presidents.

They're an insult.  George Washington and Thomas Jefferson were real leaders. That's why they are made to look so feeble or comical. Our so called leaders in D.C can't ever hope to fill their shoes.  They in fact don't even have the capacity to amount to a pimple on George Washington's butt.

Better watch it, there used to be a joke in the USSR about such things, talking trash about the leaders, was like divulging state secrets and should be punished :o

The Presidential dollars are no more than polished up versions of the Mint's Presidential medallion program which has gone on for years. As a matter of fact, when it all began, they were going to use the same designs! And, as you all know, they were butt ugly and that fact brought an uproar from collectors. The Mint decided against using their old designs and went with new butt ugly based on the old butt ugly.

As I have said for years and years, put the politicians on our paper currency and do something constructive with our coinage. We don't need dead Presidents on everything and, quite frankly, I think the U.S. has much more to offer on these tiny billboards that travel the world!

The 2008 coins are no more hideous than the 2007 ones.

I still like to collect them all, but they're not the best series of coins I have seen.

G'day.
If it were not for the generosity of several State-side members of the Forum,
I would not have any of these dollars in my collection.
As I am not a serious collector of US coin I will not be seeking expand my current  Presidential collection.
I must agree with the general consensus, they are not the greatest art  pieces of the coin world.  They seem to lack depth in in facial expression and perhaps a certain finess of detail.
regards,

Dear AdamL:
I beg to differ with you.
I collect 'UGLY DOLLARS'     Please send me a ROLL OF each of them.
In front of their sacrifice and service to a Great Nation, the face, design, ugliness DOES NOT MATTER.
HAD THEY ALIVE TO DAY, THEY WILL LOOK 'BETTER THAN ME'
I always appreciate new designs of U.S.Coins
Kind regards
George

Its nothing against those presidents, or people who are collecting the dollars. I just couldn't beleive how the ones for this year looked. I mean, Andrew Jackson looks incredibly ugly on the coin. I don't think he was that ugly in real life. He's definately not as ugly on the 20 dollar bill.

Hi folks! I have to agree with longnine009, most of our leaders today (democrat, republican, or whatever) "AIN'T WORTH 10 CENTS", and I will say the same for the JUNK the US Mint has been putting out the last couple of decades-J-U-N-K!!! That's why I collect mostly foreign coins and currency. There's so much nicer stuff out there to collect than the junky (ugly?) coins we have to use every day. Also about Andrew Jackson: he sure ain't no pretty-boy Floyd, but methinks the mint could do a better job of portraying one of our greatest presidents! Nuff said! ;D

He was an ugly person in his approach at government.  He is not deserving of being on a coin, a $20 bill, or a $10 bill as he was in 1914.  He is more suited to being a target in a loo than anything else.  This is a man who flaunted the separation of powers in the government and basically told the US Supreme Court to shove it.

If you have more query on this, look up "Trail of Tears".

I have carried a "Apache Tear Drop" in my left pocket since 1972 as a constant reminder of the past. Hand delivered and blessed by Native Americans it has been my constant companion for 35 years and a prize possession! Granted it has some wear and tear from other items banging around with it in my pocket through the years but it is one thing that will never leave me!

Oh wow, thanks for the reminder scottishmoney. I can't beleive it, I almost forgot that Jackson was the guy responsible for that one.

Mr.AdamL:
Now I understood, exactly what you meant of 'ugly coins'
Mr.Scottishmoney, your comments are 'in a differrent' angle.   This will bring better knowledge of U.S.History, for persons, living far away, from you.
Ms.Kitty:Thanks for the 'courageous comments' on  coins of your great country.   'This point of view' I too agree with you.
Some Key Date and Semi-key dates are really expensive and can't affordable to 'Samll Collecttors" like me.
Thanks for 'letting the cat, out of the bag' as to why you collect other than U.S.   You have a 'very good coin dealer' in your City.
Sincerely
George

AdamL, your opinion on the appearance of Andrew Jackson, will be brought to the personal knowledge of the concerned.
If I am successful and if there is any comment or reaction, I will inform you.
Regarding their dis-services, I am not competent to comment.   I am a total foreigner
George

of course, not being there and knowing about what he really or rightly or wrongly did, like the trail of tears, banking things, and shoving the courts up you know how, Jackson did more good for the power of the presidency than may before and after. and, he was sick and tired of the office, literally, by the time he left it.  He was one thing though, one tough son of a bitch.

Tough is right.

The only President who ever killed a man in a duel as one example.
