Welcome to a stroll down memory lane... Looks a lot different, HUH?

Title: Gary Burke aka CoinCrusader Memorial Medallion
Post by: Twoshadows on March 22, 2010, 08:42:57 AM
I am starting this thread to gain insight on how many Gary Burke Memorial medallions we will need to have struck. While nothing is definite at this time we are moving forward with this quest.
Again I will ask Nevol to keep track of orders for this quest and want everyone to know these medallions will be available to anyone who may want them. This will include other coin forums, family or friends. I will also state firmly THIS IS NOT A MONEY MAKING PROJECT. I, along with the other moderators, have determined that we should send a pre-determined amount of medallions to the Burke family when they are complete. There are quite a few Burke family members still with us in our castle so hopefully they will continue to check in with us from time to time.
At this time, not knowing how many medallions we will actually be ordering, I can only guess the price will remain at the $20 level. As soon as I make the final payment on the 2009 Medallion Quest I will have a balance on hand and we should know exactly where we stand. I will continue to keep in contact with Daniel Carr so that we might gain some insight into the time frame needed to complete this quest. Thank you all for your continued support.

Nevol please put me down for one. I posted on the other thread but would like to get everything on this one. At this time I think we need a least a half dozen (6) struck for the family. If I remember correctly they are all members of this forum.

I might ask each of you who would know of any other forums that Gary might have been a member take the time to post an announcement of his passing. I also want everyone who may be interested in having a Gary Burke Memorial Medallion to have that opportunity.

Title: Re: Gary Burke aka CoinCrusader Memorial Medallion
Post by: Nevol on March 23, 2010, 05:31:07 AM
The only other coin forum that I know Gary definitely belonged to is the Mom & Dad site and Rggoodie has already posted a topic there relating to Gary’s passing, and I sort of doubt that a note regarding a KOTCT Memorial Medallion would be exactly welcome there.  (Bobby is sending flowers on behalf of the Mom & Dad Forum)

Dare we risk asking Richard to ask Bobby if he would allow it?   I wouldn’t want to get Richard into hot water.

Hopefully some other Knights will know if Gary belonged to any other forums.  I do know Gary had joined Facebook a little while ago and although I used to be a member, the sheer number of Emails it generated was a pest, so I quit it and have no real desire to get back into it.

Maybe one/some of our Knights are on Facebook and one of them is prepared to post an announcement there to let people know the news of Gary’s passing and of the KOTCT Memorial Medallion we are organizing, and to let other 'facebookers' know that if they would like to purchase a Medallion, how to go about doing so.  (Direct them to KOTCT?  I'm not too sure about this aspect of it.)

No I would not ask Richard to go there! Many individuals can do private emails just as Nohope is doing. Thank you.
I will probably order flowers from us, if the membership does not mind, sometime tomorrow.

I am almost overwhelmed by the kindness of this group of people. Every post says so much about Gary Burke's personality. He truly did ship friendship around the world!

I will keep everyone informed when I hear from Daniel Carr as I have asked him for an approximate date on which these memorial medallions may be ready to go.

I did leave a post on CCF about the memorial medallion but looks like it has been deleted.

I would have thought for this special reason it could have been left.

It got deleted for the same reason this site changes the name to Mom and dad. Its automated I doubt anyone actively deleted the post.
I would suggest e-mail Susan directly.

Make sure you've got me down for a tribute medal honoring the CoinCrusader.

btw - I just sent an announcement about the situation to Coin Talk, where Gary was a member since 2004:
http://www.cointalk.com/t99077/

p.s: Doug, one of the admins at Coin Talk, says he's sorry about Gary's passing and suggested I post there once the medals are ready to their open forum.

edix, Do you think we should order some spares for members of 'Coin Talk'?  Would you be able to ask them for an estimate of how many may be needed?  We wouldn't want anyone to miss out as it will be a one off minting, but by the same token, we don't want to have a lot of them left over.

Nohope has already ordered 4 extras, but I'm not sure which forum they might be for.

I've also just put up a post on the Aussie forum (ACBO) but haven't mentioned the medallions yet, but if there are many responses, I probably will do so.  There may be 1 or 2 members there who would be interested in obtaining one.

It would probably be best if someone explained this is basically a subscription order? Any member here can place the order or, if they like they can send the order and payment directly to me. It would be ideal if they could just order from Daniel but then we would be putting a burden on him. I really don't know how much interest there might be away from KOTCT but I am not opposed to offering this memorial tribute to the world. Gary Burke has been a coin crusader since I found him on my first computer. We have been friends ever since and I know, without a doubt, there are others throughout the world who feel the same way.

Before I leave internet land..
Up my order to 8
payment sent.

why 8?
not because I know 8 people who knew Coincrusader and wanted a medallion. I know 3 who are no longer active in any forums who might be interested.  This project however is going to be very rapid compared to most minting and I am sure there will be people who will miss out through lack of knowledge. I will try to have a small overage on hand to cover this eventuality. If it turns out they are not needed at some date in the future i'll turn them over to KOTCT to be given as awards to who ever they see fit.

Nevol you can mark NoHope PAID at this time. This medallion will be struck in April so it is very important that we get our orders in and make payment in a timely manner. I know this quest was very sudden but in my mind no one would be more worthy than our friend and his family from Colorado. Those grandchildren will cherish their medallions for a lifetime and they will learn as they grow older it takes a pretty darn special knight to warrant the striking of a medalion! Gary was that special!

Do you have a firm price for this medallion as yet.   Also what about postage.

Once I have figure will send payment thu PayPal as gift so KOTCT do not pay the fees.

I may be going out on a limb here but let's just go with $3.00 for shipping per member order. I know there will be a few who purchase more than one medallion but I think it will all balance out in the end. I will also be sending any and all Aussie member orders to one address (I hope) so that should balance out as well. Any comments?

Nevol you can go ahead and mark Templar paid for his medallion even though the check has not arrived here in Indiana. Templar says it's is in the mail and thats good enough for me as I want to keep our figures moving upward on this quest. It is going to be a quick one! I might add it is important that each of you let me know for certain what you are paying for as I am still awaiting some payments on the 2009 medallions and I don't want to screw things up! Thanks!

Hey Nevol I have Tobyle's payment now so give her some good ole Aussie "PAID" stamp of approval.

Pocketcoins each medallion will be $20 and each member, regardless of where he or she lives, will pay $3.00 for first class shipping. I will have to purchase bubble mailers for the 2009 medallion quest so I will just buy some extra for this quest at the same time!

AdamL and Nevol PLEASE make sure I get Jon Burke's mailing address so there will be no delay when the medallions are ready. I would appreciate that very much.

Looking back over the past few weeks I again see a handful of people daring to do the impossible. Only this time it is different. Instead of us doing the impossible for our group we are daring to do the impossible for our fallen friend. This quest is unique as it comes from the heart and knowing the world needs more Gary Burke's. In this castle memories are carved and protected. Just as Catman's last silver medallion travels with Excaliber The Pet Set Gary's medallion will remind us of what we all can be and should be and what a small group of men and women with a goal can achieve.

Nevol I have received payment from Humpybong and Pocketcoins so you can mark them paid.

I want to remind everyone I am keeping track of incoming funds on the second page of this thread. These funds are dedicated to this memorial medallion quest ONLY and will NOT be shown in the KOTCT TREASURY. While we will be using treasury funds to pay for the sculpting and engraving fees it should be a bit easier for me and my mind to keep monies separate, at least on paper, as I am still accepting payments for the 2009 medallion quest at this time.

Jon has now ordered a total of 3 Medallions and I'll be sending him details of how to pay soon. I have to go work at the shop today, so I'm a bit short of time.

He's buying one each for his father, (Gary's only sibling), himself and his 4 year old son.

I have been in touch with D. Carr today and now need to get in touch with MedicMichelle. Does anyone have her current phone number? I have a number but it doesn't work any longer. Perhaps she has gone to a cell phone only? If anyone can help me out I would appreciate it.

Also does anyone have a GOOD photo of Gary Burke we could borrow for a while. The ones I have are distant or harshly shadowed. Need this quickly as well. Thanks and I await any help I can get on this.

I have been in touch with Gary Burke's daughter Michelle today and want to pass along a little information at this time. Daniel Carr has requested a nice clear photo of Gary which Michelle will be forwarding to the Moonlight Mint. I think the Moonlight Mint will produce a medallion we can all be proud to have and hold in memory of our friend.
Michelle also expressed her gratitude to each and every member of this forum which her father loved so dearly. She also advised the family will be requesting other medallions, for family and friends, in the very near future.
I would also like to mention the Knights of the Coin Table had a letter published in the Delta, Colorado newspaper last Wednesday paying tribute to Gary. I had no idea whether or not it would be published but I did want the folks in Delta to know Gary Burke was known and loved around the world.
As soon as I receive any information from the Moonlight Mint I will make sure it is posted here for all to see. Thank you all again for being such a great bunch of collectors I/We are proud to call friends. It truly is almost like a family.

Now that the 2009 Medallion Quest has been completed by Daniel Carr and the Moonlight Mint our attention, as well as his, will turn to this memorial quest. The Article:

Burke left an impression on coin collectors worldwide

Dear Editor:

On Thursday, May 18, Delta lost a well-known citizen with the passing of Gary Burke. It is our understanding Gary was a well-known sports writer and avid fan, spending the bulk of his life following the sports world.

Tears will surely flow as memories are shared over the loss of your neighbor and friend.

At this time tears are also being shed all over the world as Gary Burke had another side that most folks were not aware of. He had a tremendous love of numismatics, or coin collecting as most of us now call the hobby. A few years ago this amazing technology we call the Internet connected folks from all walks of life, from around the world, on various forums to discuss our hobbies and our passions.

A very small group of collectors had a dream and Gary Burke helped foster that dream into an international coin forum which became known as The Knights of the Coin Table. Based on truth, honesty and integrity the coin collectors involved shared knowledge as the membership grew. With old-fashioned chivalry as our guide, members began trading equal value collectables, and the idea has since spread around the world, with Gary forging the way in an effort to promote the love of numismatics with anyone who wished to learn.

In a few short years the Knights of the Coin Table forum was up and running with Gary Burke serving in the capacity of moderator on a world class forum. With Gary’s help we created the first membership-owned forum in the Internet world. He quietly served as the forum scribe, secretary and historian, while at the same time fulfilling his role as a father, grandfather, husband and employee for his local newspaper.

In 2007 the Knights of the Coin Table managed a first for an Internet forum group when they commissioned Colorado engraver and sculptor Daniel Carr to create their first silver, copper, brass and pewter medallions. We received e-mails from all over the world telling us it could not be done by such a small group. We were told repeatedly not to waste our time and efforts as major coin clubs throughout the world could not succeed in such an endeavor as thousands of dollars would have to be raised to fulfill such a dream. Undeterred and with Gary’s guidance and help the impossible became possible. Final shipment of our first medallions would be launched, under the direction of Gary and his wife Pat, from their home in Delta. The feat was again accomplished in 2008 and 2009 as we now await for last year’s medallions.

In the past few hours coin collectors from Australia, China, Turkey, Great Britain, Canada, Egypt, Belgium, Germany, Slovak Republic, Estonia, Romania, Italy, India, United States and the Netherlands have learned of the loss of our friend and mentor. We at this time are quickly moving forward with a new quest, which will again be a first for an Internet coin forum, as we prepare a memorial tribute to our friend from Colorado who gave so much to the world and asked nothing in return.

Last fall I was fortunte enough to meet Gary and Pat Burke as they ventured through the state of Indiana while on vacation. After spending countless hours online with this unique individual from Colorado I could now put a face with the name. I am one of the lucky ones in this group who got to shake the hand of such an outstanding personality.

Over the course of a lifetime we each will meet thousands of people. Some will be in passing while others will remain for a while, in our lives and in our hearts. And then there are those rare few who will never be forgotten as they truly do leave footprints on your heart. Gary Burke had done so in over 15 countries in the world and we are honored to have known and shared with this man and his family from Delta, Colorado.

Our Lady in Australia should confirm that order within hours! We will wait for her reply and go from there.

I would like to add the fact Daniel is working on an image of Gary for the memorial medallion at this time. !/We have been in touch with Michelle to obtain an appropriate photo for the Moonlight Mint to work from. I also know the Burke family is going to be interested in a rather large order of medallions and I/We have already agreed to work with them on their request.

Sometime soon I will post a payment due date which we will need to meet in order to fulfill our financial requirements to this project. I will continue to keep all of you posted as this quest moves forward. Thank you in advance for your support.

I would like to let each of you know the Burke family, in this very trying time, is overwhelmingly in favor of the design which Daniel has presented this week to our membership. They have been touched deeply! I have been in contact with Michelle concerning the design and she has worked with Daniel to get that perfect photograph for the medallion. I advised her on Wednesday the finished design had been posted for our review and she, in turn, rushed to her mother's side to present the news.
Later Wednesday I received a call from our Mountain Lady, Pat Burke, concerning the medallion and our efforts to provide this very worthy memorial for our Knight Sir Gary Burke. I had asked Michelle for the families approval before we struck the design. I simply cannot find the words to describe the love and the thanks offered from Pat and her family in Delta. In this very trying time we have given them something unexpected and they are just overwhelmed with gratitude to all of our members spread around the world who have so generously made this memorial a reality. Pat described Gary's love for this forum and the people he had befriended here. Through the years many of us have become one big family, whether we knew it or not, and will continue to do so as we move forward. When the time is right both Pat and Michelle will be posting their own replies to our endeavors but until then they have asked that I tell EACH OF YOU how much they appreciate our efforts and the love they have for our membershp.
While we all wish to have one small piece to commemorate our friendship with Gary, our CoinCrusader, his family is now awaiting an heirloom to have, hold and cherish for generations to come. Years from now when these medallions are passed on to others there will be stories told and part of the story will be resting on the back of the medallion telling all that in 2010 Knights and Knightesses still roamed the planet. Only through the miracle of technology could they exist and with a click of the mouse they spread around the world sharing their passion for their hobby, the joy of distant friendship and, at times, heartbreak and tears. One of those  medallions shall forever rest, embedded, in the tombstone of Gary Burke in Delta, Colorado.
It is an honor to be a small part of this story, to be a friend of his family and to have known a personality like Gary Burke.

I have received a free standing Castle Plaque which has been handcrafted by Madspec to hold one of our 63mm Pewter Medallions. This plaque will be presented to the Burke family with one of the memorial medallions after they are struck. Thank you Madspec for your time, effort and craftsmanship in this project.
I will get a photo of Madspec's craftsmanship as soon as I can get with TKO and will post the plaque here for all to see. I am sure Madspec is willing to turn out a few more of these castles if any of our members are interested in displaying their pewter medallions in such a way. Personally I like what he has done and see the potential of adding a few to display all my pewters.
Hopefully I can get a quote from Madspec for each plaque and offer them real soon through the KOTCT or directly from Madspec. Thanks again to Marion for this gift to the Burke family.

I have learned, from Daniel Carr, there is a chance the CoinCrusader Memorial Medallion could be struck as early as next week if his order for pewter blanks arrive by then. Once again we are nearing the end of another successful quest.

I will be needing to wrap up the order count very quickly with our membership and also with the Burke family. If you want one of these PLEASE get it on order.

I can also do them in Walnut but the price would be about $35.00 as it is more expensive and a little harder to work with.

The shipping in the US would be $4.95 Priority Flat Rate
The cheapest I could find for Australia would be $13.50

Anyone wanting one just email me with what type wood and your email address and I will send you my paypal link or my address if you don't want to use paypal.
I can usually make and ship in about 7 days.

I am debating whether or not the KOTCT should purchase a few of these medallions for future sale? I know without a doubt someone will want one in the future but don't know whether or not to tie up our funds? Any thoughts on this? For what it is worth I was thinking 4 to 6 medallions?

I THINK IT WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA TO HAVE A FEW IN STOCK FOR PROCRASTINATORS OR ESPECIALLY HAVE SOME FOR NEW MEMBERS TO BE ABLE TO OBTAIN...................MAYBE NOT THE GARY BURKE MEDALLONS BECAUSE THEY  WOULD  NOT MEAN AS MUCH  TO THOSE WHO MET HIM,TRADED WITH HIM OR TALKED TO HIM BUT MANY NEW MEMBERS WOULD WANT BACK MEDALS OF OUR ORGANIZATION

I will also have 2 spares in the event that any Aussies (new members or not) desire to own one of them at a later date.  ;)

If, after a while, there are no Aussies that want one, they would become available to anyone, anywhere. ( I haven't determined how long a 'while' is though.)   ::)

The clock is slowly ticking as we await word from Daniel Carr on these memorial medallions. I am anxious to know if we will have the first matrix-dot technology medallion here in the states!!!

Nuggethill I will be putting up a new Red Rascal, with a 68 and a half inch wing span and nitro engine, tomorrow if weather permits. I have lost my first two nitro powered planes this spring due to a faulty on/off switch (know that now) so this new plane was built and a NEW on/off switch added. Still have to name her but I am starting to envision a KOTCT Knight Flyer? Will have to keep you posted on this first flight!

Hi Nevol! Seems like I am always wanting something! Please add 32 medallions for the Burke Family to our list. I will advise when payment is received.
I also want everyone to know I offered the Burke Family these medallions at our cost per medallion, whatever that might be, as I had NO intention of figuring their purchase into the production costs of these medallions. I hope everyone agrees with my thought process on this matter. If not please email me to voice any concerns. Thanks.

Hello Knights and Knightesses!

My family received our medallions yesterday -- we are speechless, thrilled, and honored; they are absolutely incredible. My mom (Mountain Lady) loves the medallion, it brought tears of joy and thankfulness. Papa would have simply been astonished at such a tribute, but it would have touched him deeply and I can think of no better way to honor him.  CoinCrusader was blessed to have you in his life, as friends and collectors. I speak for my entire family when I say Thank You -- thank you for the time you spent, the conversations you had, the trades you made, for being the Knights/Knightesses. Thank you so much for this incredible Medallion, especially to Terry, Daniel Carr, and all who dwell within these castle walls. We will cherish the medallion and you forever. Bless you all and thanks again.

Michelle

Sir Gary Burke absolutely loved the huge 63mm pewters so we went with his love of the medallions. It also gave us much more room to design something appropriate for our friend and his family. With that in mind we moved quickly to say "Thank You" to someone who has done so much for so many and asked nothing in return. The Burke family will forever be a part of KOTCT and we of them!

The Burke Family in Delta, Colorado is still absolutely in awe over the medallions produced by KOTCT and Daniel Carr's Moonlight Mint. They have received more requests from family members for the medallions so if any of you have extra medallions for sale PLEASE email MedicMichelle with information. You can email her by going to the "members" list and search for her name. Thank you in advance for any consideration you give this request.

I received the memorial medallion today, which was a bit sentimental due to the fact that a local friend of mine died this morning. (He had previously told me he's left me some Russian coins in his will.)
I think Daniel Carr's rendition of Gary Burke is amazing. What a great innovation!
There's some press grease on the rims, but that lends itself to the hand wrought authenticity of the piece.
Cheers!

I've actually still got about 5 pieces that are struck just fine, but I had issues applying the edge lettering and it didn't come out quite right (doubled lettering and/or partially missing edge lettering).   I was going to destroy those "rejects", but didn't yet.   I can send those.   I also have the die which I could also send.   What address should I send them to ?

Thanks.   It isn't really "press grease" - more like planchet grease.   The pewter is sort of a "greasy" metal, with lots of impurity inclusions.

PS:
My condolences on your friend.

Wow! That high pressure must act like a leaching process then.

Once when I was striking some 63mm pewter, I failed to notice that the coin press was adjusted
for blanks that were half the tickness of the blank I just inserted.   Compared to other metals,
striking pewter is like "punching pillows".   When I stamped this one, it literally went "poof !",
and flakes of pewter went flying all over the room - like a feather pillow that had exploded.

I am proud to FINALLY announce that all medallions which are paid in full are IN THE MAIL!!! Sorry for the delay but my private life was a bit in turmoil for a few weeks. Things are returning to normal so I should be back with all of you very soon. (single though!)

Daniel if you would just send the medallions to me if the Burke family has not contacted you. I will see that they get the ten medallions they requested.

I still have NOT received payment for a couple of medallions so I will just sit on them for the time being. Thanks to all of you for another successful quest.

Wyoming and Colorado you can visit anytime.  Come on down to Aus, I'm sure there are plenty of Knights that will offer you a bed, a mug of mead and a hot meal.

Seriously, anytime you, or any other member of the KOTCT find themselves in the Canberra region, you will always have a place to stay.  I even have a spare car.  It might not have any petrol due to a son who thinks the more petrol a car has, the more likely he is to use it rather than his own (which never has any petrol).

Just let me know when you are arriving.

I/We will be glad to refund funds for the mailings. Still got some money  and as you know, everyone  here gets treated the same and NO ONE is expected to foot a bill anytime. Just let me know and I will gladly refund your money.
Well got to go as I am expecting an unexpected Sheila here on the 4th of July! Might be fireworks after all!!! ;)

Takes about 10 days......I think it will be here Monday or Tuesday

Still has not arrived.......if you have a tracking number please check with your post office Terry.

Normal mail takes about 10 days so priority mail should have been a lot quicker.  Ask for a refund!

It is NOT the refund I am worried about. It's the medallions and I hope we can get Daniel to strike some more if they don't turn up. I have NEVER lost a package and I don't want to start now! Perhaps they are tied up in customs?

I once had a small letter take nearly 4 weeks to get here from the US, normal mail, so I wouldn't panic just yet.

Terry, do you remember what date you posted them?

I realize Priority should be quicker, but you never know.

A parcel from Canada took a detour via AUSTRIA on it's way to Austr(al)ia.

I had a parcel sent to me by Gary, it took 3 months to arrive.
It must have gone by sea instead of air.

I will have to see if I can locate the receipt as I know I kept it. Of course I have moved twice in the last month so locating things seems to take a bit longer. One way or another there will be medallions in Australia if I have to ride one of Burkes Turtles myself. Keep me posted Barry! ;)

I can't believe the U.S. Mint hasn't grabbed up Daniel Carr. It is apparent they have NO ONE with a vision on their current staff. The man's work is second to NONE!

One has been returned to me by Australia Post.   Someone (in the USA) put incorrect suburb in the address on envelope.

Have re-addressed it and it is on its way again.

OOps - I'm very sorry, Daniel ...... it was just a coincidence that my niece, Danielle phoned while I was writing that comment. And now, for some reason, it doesn't give me the option to correct my post.

Well Ithink the member who will be on the rack is the one who wrote out the addresses on the envelopes.

Mixed up 2 Knights addresses. Correct street details but wrong town.

Has been fixed so all is well.

Now remember I have been under a lot of undue stress lately and all those addresses, provided by Nevol, just seemed to run together. And my doctor had me on some medication so I am sure that must have been it? None the less I stayed up all night watching the street looking for suspicious vehicles with Michigan license plates! Templar was just too eager!
