Scotland Robert I(1306-1329)

Penny, similar to the last penny issued during John's reign, with four mullets of five points. This coin is S-5076 and SRB1D-005. There are two varieties of this coin, one with a bar over the A in GRA, and another without the bar.

And next another coin that just oozes history:

Mary(1542-1567)
This is a Testoon, or five shillings coin struck in .916 fine silver.  This coin was likely designed in Paris, and reflects the marriage in 1558 of Queen Mary to Francis II of France, their monogramme and halved arms are present on this coin.  Like many coins, this coin was countermarked to raise it's value in 1578 with the thistle to re-value it to 7 shillings 4 pence.  In higher grades like this piece, they are quite scarce now.

I must say I am impressed! Everytime I find something ancient on Ebay it seems evey collector in the world is waiting to take it away from me! Have managed a few ancient Romans for my little guy but really interested in that vast section of years between the Roman Empire and 1700 AD. I will patiently wait for the right opportunity but will put more effort into the Scotish section on Ebay from here on out!!!

It has been awhile since I have made a significant acquisition from eBay.  Either there is something wrong with the stuff there, or it is grossly overpriced.

Yes there are 5000 items on ebay germany in the gold category right now
99% I would not want to own and the other 1% is too highly priced to start with
I got Kitty however and was a boy in trouble
My wife said immidiately she wanted it as a pendant and I had to be devious
Kitty or another diamond ring
Of course she went for the diamond ring which is cheaper then Kitty  Grin

I have searched Ebay a few times since Scottishmoney started posting some of this beautiful and historical pieces but to no avail!!! Cry  Too many coins and so little time. Boy do I need a time machine? (Perferably a two seater as I hate to travel alone)

In the last five years or so I have bought a grand total of two coins on fleaBay.  Sadly, the coins I want are usually not there.  This was an exception:

I binned this for £35 in December, it was one of those very rare auctions where the auction BIN was a lot less than the value of the piece, coupled with the fact this is a rare date Merk, or 13 Shillings 4 Pence.

While on the subject of new Scots, something that is the holy grail of Scottish monarchs comes my way soon.  As well as another relic tied to a famous monarch...to be continued.

I kind of figured Ebay was NOT your weapon of choice, so to speak! Your last coin posted is really a beauty! It is a great feeling when once in a while one not only finds something worthwhile on Ebay but actually gets a good deal on it as well!

Twoshadows,
Don't go to ebay for ancients, most are over priced and there is no guarantee of authenticity. Go to...

www.forumancientcoins.com

More reasonable, and guaranteed!!!

I did find yet another underpriced and overlooked coin on eBay just this week.  Then there is another coin on there right now that is extremely rare and desirous, even if I have the nicest known example.

I would also venture to recommend looking at Vcoins.com sometime, I have dealt with several dozen of the dealers on there, never a bad experience and plenty of great ones.  Actually one of the dealers there has some very nice Scots at the moment, and I wouldn't have said anything but I already got the pick of the litter.
