FINALLY, I have a little time to work on this.   Did this sketch during the football game today:

Oooh, I love it!  Dragons, Lady Knight, perfect!

The chest ought to be open though, spilling those beloved COINS out for all to see. ;)  Just a thought!

It hasn't been opened yet, she's holding the key ;)

lol.  The one between the dragon's paws, not THAT one.

I read way too much fantasy. I've never known a dragon to keep his treasures locked in a chest.. or have a treasure that actually fit into a treasure chest.  But this is me!  Let's get the other  members to weigh in on it.

I did not use any models or use any pictures when I did the drawing.   I just drew it out of my head (while watching football), not thinking of anyone in particular.   Same as last year (except I did look at a few lion pictures for that one).

If we're going to have another Knightress how about one with a sword? I have a hard time picturing a Knight/Knightress without a sword or armor, even it's just light armor.

I am not a doctor MD nor a painter
But if that is a woman ; my subconscious mind is rejecting the idea
I do not know what is anatomically wrong ; but it ain't right . Does not feel right
It feels like a serf with long hair mistakenly rendered with what should be / are supposed to / female
protuberances  :)

The shoulders are too wide, the neck is too wide, and the knee caps are off.
All would be corrected during sculpting.   This was a fast concept sketch.

First and foremost we must keep in mind this is a sketch D. Carr made while enjoying the Indianapolis Colts victory!

Next I would have to say the whole idea of a dragon guarding a treasure chest was to represent those key dates which are awfully hard to come by and we all know what thats like! Getting them at times seems like stealing them from a dragon and, in a sense, the key date coins are as rare as dragons are today.

Now as for the lady knight I, being a male, still LOVE the ladies and can't help but wonder (please forgive me here) how many medallions we would sell on Ebay if there was a bare breast? I saw a photo of a newly released coin from (I forgot already) which shows the birth of Venus (I think) and it appears she is a bit overexposed which makes it a must have coin. She is also a full grown woman when she was created. I will have to find the link and post it so you can see for your self the beauty that can lie upon the small surface of a coin or medallion. Lets face it sex sells and we have been bombarded every day of our lives. With that in mind I would hope Daniel will doll baby our lady up a bit and we will see where she can take us? Just what I need another fantasy but....we all tend to look and dream don't we? No bigger than she will be on this medallion it is not going to do much more than add to the design is it? Boy the 63mm pewter medallions will be keepers though!
I say work on her Daniel and add some scales to the Dragon and lets have another look. The sooner this is done the sooner you can fire up the coin press!

Botticelli's so-called "Birth of Venus" (aka: Venus on the Half Shell) is taken from Roman mythology (based on earlier Greek). She's seen rising from the waters riding a scallop shell with a bit of the sea foam evident that caused her birth. The shell symbolizes the ancient product of the water, which gave birth to us all. Various other pagan images adorn the painting. And Venus is the goddess of sexuality, so she's gonna be depicted a bit sexy, 'natch.
The knights' code of chivalry was based in, in part, courtly love -- a product likely brought to Europe from Persia. (A loaf of bread, a glass of wine and thou, &c.) Courtly love involved a strange practice of loving women from a distance, mostly the lady of the castle or manor, who was already spoken for.
BTW: the Botticelli painting is reprinted in ink transfer on a 2008 Cook Islands coin.
Here's some courtly love:

In the right  theme bare breasts are fine. They look great on  Mexican Libertads.  ;D  But why would a  knight/knightress ride into a battle with an exposed chest?

The Amazons allegedly cut off a breast to be better at archery.

Step 1:
Convert scanned drawing into surface (dark lines on drawing become guideline grooves in surface).
Step 2:
Modify lines before beginning 3-D embossing:

I like the concept design.

Let's not get too carried away with the look.  We don't want a painted ho, a muscled ogress, or a one breasted amazon. Do we?  A battle axe is good in the hands of Druss the Legend (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Druss_the_Legend#Characters), but perhaps not a female warrior.

That's taking "Be all that you can be" to extremes.  I think there's a statue or painting of Diana the Huntress with a bow and bare breasts. It still doesn't make sense to me though for a knight male or female not to have their chests protected.

Technically, in my design she isn't a "dragonslayer", but rather a friend of the dragon.

I like the armor.  And the bangos can still jiggle and bobble enough to distract her opponent. But contained enough so they won't be flopping around like mud skippers when wields a sword--a historical image that I'm really having trouble visualizing.

You know she kind a looks like a distant relative of Hillary?  Maybe that serpent is a symbolic bobbit job?   ;D

Paint Your Wagon I can understand why you have HELD on to that picture. Got to love a good warrior! ;)

Daniel, after you take your aspirins for that headache, I would suggest a third toe on the dragon as, if I remember correctly from my younger years, all of our local dragons had three toes! Work a little magic on the Knightesses and I can be happy. Quite honestly I am thrilled to see the castle in the background as that had NOT even entered my mind. This medallion will have a ton of meaning, at least to us KOTCT members, and it does represent our modern day collecting with an age old theme! ;)

Longnine I can see where a bunch of bare breased beauties coming at me might discourage my willingness to fight? Shoot just the pictures I have seen here have already made me want to surrender!!! Where's the white flag when I need one! I want to be taken captive!!! ;D

Sounds like Sir Galahad The Chaste In Castle Anthrax from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

ZOOT: Oh, I am afraid our life must seem very dull and quiet compared to yours. We are but eight score young blondes and brunettes, all between sixteen and nineteen-and-a-half, cut off in this castle with no one to protect us. Oooh. It is a lonely life: bathing, dressing, undressing, making exciting underwear. We are just not used to handsome knights. Nay. Nay. Come. Come. You may lie here. Oh, but you are wounded!

Narrator: "On top of old Horror Hill, in a secret laboratory,
Professor Weirdo and Count Kook were in their monstrous glory."
Professor Weirdo: "Six drops of essence of terror,
Five drops of sinister sauce."
Count Kook: "When the stirring's done, may I lick the spoon?"
Professor Weirdo: "Of Course, Ha ha, of course;
Now for the tincture of tenderness, but I must use only a touch;
For without a touch of tenderness it might destroy me, oops, too much;
Better hold your breath it's starting to tick."
Count Kook: "Better hold my hand I'm feeling sick!"
Milton: "Hello Daddy."
Professor Weirdo: "What have I done?"
Milton: "I'm Milton, your brand new son!"

When Daniel has finished stirring in all our requirements, the coin should be wonderful.

Seriously though a dragon leering through monocle at a Knightress might be an interesting twist. And might not take much time to change?

Aspirins may not do it with this thread. Daniel might need some Jack Daniels.  ;D

Sun Tzu said "Strength become weakness, weakness becomes strength." How can this happen unless things are trying to become what they are not. And if people are the cause of events and things become what they were not, then haven't  the same people that caused the events to happen become what they were not? How can cycles even exist unless things become what they were not before? Maybe people in insane asylums will be running the world soon and will be viewed  by everyone else as "talented."  Maybe Cosmic Trigger will become the new "norm."  8)

When things change so quickly and at an accelerating pace you have "abolition of context." Or lack of standards or norms. That is "norms" and standards can never be established or have time to root and be accepted as a social "norm." Or they are constantly eroding like so called grading standards.  How can changes occur at all unless something with standards changed. How can an AU58 become a MS63 unless "norms" changed. If "norms" keep changing they never existed in the first place. People called crazy may never have been crazy. Albert Einstein was so disinterested in public school brainwashing that today, by today's "norms" he would have been diagnosed as having attention deficit disorder and and made into a Pharm zombie. "Norms" are whatever happens to be convenient for someone to changed things around to their liking and anyone who doesn't like it must be crazy.

Insanity *so they say* is "deviation from established norms."  If norms don't exist or barely exist, or don't stay established, then how do they know who is or who isn't a whack job? What happens when the people who decide who is or isn't a   whack job  are whack jobs themselves, as seems all too likely if they are projecting their own whacko-ness on someone else.  Which, IMO,  is exactly what happens in politics. People from each party are merely seeing themselves in someone else.

I just hope I don't mutate into a humanist.  :D

Oooh, I forgot something:  If there are no established, accepted norms to follow  people are  deviating from non-existence  norms. Which in turn makes them abnormal. If non-existent  norms become the norm then being abnormal becomes the norm.

Cosmic Trigger is a book by Robert Anton Wilson that centers a lot on Aleister Crowley--My most favorite deviant, anti-altruist, anti-humanist, anti-religion  "extremist" Individual. No matter what else they say about him, which is plenty.

Sorry for the late edits. I'm not getting  good connections today. Maybe I'll send AT&T their bill back with: Error 680. Connection to remote checkbook could not be established.  Please go @&^$  yourself.

I don't believe there can be an outlandish dragon. If they are a fantasy to begin with they are whatever you want them to be.

Hot babes in skimpy armor might be outlandish but still a good expenditure of chivalrous effort.  8)

More like ''escapism" which is often  said of things that aren't viewed as "serious." Including coin collecting by those don't collect coins.

Silver is down again today at $16.23. Perhaps the delay will be slightly beneficial.

Oh there were dragons just as sure as there were Unicorns and Pegasus. They like many other things are still here but smart enough to avoid and deceive mankind. Normal folks don't make up fokelore they pass it on to keep it alive after mankind destroys it. Just as the fairy will come to those who wish a glimpse of what could have been or was. To believe in whats not is probably more true than believing that which has been painted before your eyes as realilty. Our medallion is a reflection of something that is very real to us so in a sense we are painting our own reality in a realm that, just a few short years ago, did not exist. Who is right and who is wrong and who gets to chose?
All the old ways and beliefs, regardless of whether they were right or wrong, were not forced aside by the average man and woman, but by government and religion. After hundreds of years they are still pushing yet men and women all over the world have kept them alive! Why? ;)

Sorry Daniel! We do get carried away on occassion but it is so much fun in our world.

Right now I am listening to the sound track from King Arthur so I am in another world for the next hour or so. And I do listen LOUD when my wife is not home!!! ;D

Irish Rovers

A long time ago, when the Earth was green
There was more kinds of animals than you've ever seen
They'd run around free while the Earth was being born
And the loveliest of all was the unicorn

There was green alligators and long-necked geese
Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees
Some cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you're born
The loveliest of all was the unicorn

The Lord seen some sinning and it gave Him pain
And He says, "Stand back, I'm going to make it rain"
He says, "Hey Noah, I'll tell you what to do
Build me a floating zoo,
and take some of those...

    Green alligators and long-necked geese
Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees
Some cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you're born
    Don't you forget My unicorns

Old Noah was there to answer the call
He finished up making the ark just as the rain started to fall
He marched the animals two by two
And he called out as they came through
Hey Lord,

I've got green alligators and long-necked geese
Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees
Some cats and rats and elephants, but Lord, I'm so forlorn
I just can't find no unicorns"

And Noah looked out through the driving rain
Them unicorns were hiding, playing silly games
Kicking and splashing while the rain was falling
Oh, them silly unicorns

There was green alligators and long-necked geese
Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees
Noah cried, "Close the door because the rain is falling
And we just can't wait for no unicorns"

The ark started moving, it drifted with the tide
The unicorns looked up from the rocks and they cried
And the waters came down and sort of floated them away
That's why you never see unicorns to this very day

You'll see green alligators and long-necked geese
Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees
Some cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you're born
You're never gonna see no unicorns

[New Lyrics]
Now you might think this is the ending to the song,
But I'll have to tell you friends that in fact you're wrong
You see, Unicorns are magical, so when the rain started pouring,
They grew themselves some wings and they took to soaring.

You'll see green alligators and long-necked geese
Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees
But if you're looking for the unicorns, don't be forlorn,
The second star to the right and straight on until morning.

Every story, every tale came from some where but we know not by whom. But we do know which have been crushed by those in power but we know not why? And yet they survive passed by those who know more truth than we will ever be told. We live a life based on someone else's agenda but that is going to end soon. Are you ready!

Bring forth the medallions Daniel!!! That is real!

Will Carlton Sheets give a Last Seminar on his amazing no money down shistem for buying distressed real estate? Gordon Brown will probably show up.

Say wouldn't 2012 satirical tokens be cool? Like the satirical Hard Times Tokens? Bizarro is already making jokes about it, showing Mayan telling an elder "I'm only had enough room to go to 2012."  Elder: "Oh that'll freak people out some day."

Daniel you have been a busy man the last few hours. I do believe this will get some attention. When one thinks of those "Key Dates" which can take a lifetime to locate and purchase this is sooooooooo fitting. She has the key, which in my mind is the knowledge and finances to finally purchase the desire coin, but still faces the challenge of actually finding the desired coin, hence the dragon and treasure chest. The castle as we all know is our home and that is where we want to take the coin! WE will know what this medallion represents! This is good! ;)

Daniel,
While not relevant to the design, I am interested in the material that the medallions come in.  Are they safe for long term storage, e.g., do they contain acids, pvc etc?  I'm concerned because I generally put my coins in a box never to be seen again.  Should I be putting them in 2x2s or someother inert containment?

Title: Re: 2009 Design Sketch

Yass for what its worth I have left my Pewters in the slip cover they come in. Some of my silvers were put in airtites while others still remain in the plastic slip cover. All of my coppers and brass are in the plastic slip cover provided by Daniel and nothing has tarnished in any way to this date. Some of my medallions are on display here in the house while others are tucked away in a safe. Maybe I have just been lucky but I have had no problems. I am sure someoen would be willing to see that you get airtites for your medallions (38mm) if you desire them as that is the safest way to protect coins in my opinion. I wish I could locate an airtite for the 63mm Pewters! Hope this helps as from my experience nothing beats an airtite if you really want to protect your investment. ;)

Please take the time to check the list of orders which Nevol is tracking for us. We need to catch any errors prior to submitting our final order. Thanks to Nevol for her efforts as well. We are getting closer each day to fulfilling another impossible quest as a group! ;)

Title: Re: 2009 Design Sketch

Longnine things have progressed very quickly the last few days. I have already accepted payments on 17 orders and a date for final orders has been set for March 5th. With the monies on hand and money promised we are going ahead full steam. I/We are requesting payments be made NO later than March 25th if D. Carr is going to proceed with production. To this date a little over $2,000 has already arrived at the KOTCT Royal Treasury. I will probably proceed with a payment to the MoonLight Mint very soon to cover the cost of silver blanks.
You can send a check to me or use PayPal. The choice is yours. And, as always, I thank each and every Knight and Knightess for making another medallion quest a success.

Are we going to do the 2010 Medallion Quest later this summer? Daniel Carr is going to start on designs for both the obverse and reverse this time around. Yes or No?

Daniel I think, at this time, if I/We were to give you any instructions it would be "We want you to create the most beautiful design the world has ever seen. An award winner everyone on the planet would want in their collection. Let your mind go where its never gone before to find a masterpiece hidden in the depths of time. Art and beauty seems to be lost in the world of coinage we are now seeing. Lets give the world something to talk about! Just keep us posted as no matter what you come up with I am sure we can tie it to the KOTCT and coin collecting. You design it and we will create the appropriate description to match our needs. Not a doubt in my mind! ;)

And don't forget there can be two sides to this story. Both the obverse and reverse will be changed! The right design just might set the medallion collectors in the world on fire. Could be a very profitable venture for all involved? ;)

Yes, the advancing skeletons would be blown to bits.   The skeletons would represent the destructive forces of corrupt banks.   The Wizard would represent sound economic principles.
