Greece, 1000 Drachmai, 1950, P326a. Can anyone identify the coins on this note? I think the big kitty on the reverse needs a hobby of some sorts..... looks bored out of his mind...... imagine having to sit there for hours posing for the engraver...LOL! Roll Eyes Anyone know of other world notes with coins pictured on them? Thanks. John Grin

...Can anyone identify the coins on this note?

Quite a topical question at the moment. This note shows the obverse and reverse of a silver stater of Olympia, issued sometime around 330 BC. It's presumed that the city had to issue new coins every Olympiad, with the huge influx of visitors. The obverse shows Zeus, the reverse shows Zeus' eagle battling a snake.

Here's and example on CoinArchives. As you can probably imagine, these coins are highly sought after today.

...Anyone know of other world notes with coins pictured on them?

"Coins on coins" or "numismatic objects on numismatic objects" is a minor sub-theme in my collection. The Greeks are quite proud of their ancient heritage, and lots of ancient Greek coins have appeared on Greek notes. I have an inflationary period note like this one with a didrachm of Epirus on it.

Other notes I have in my collection that show coins:

- Fiji 1 penny WWII emergency note with a picture of a 1 penny coin.
- Iraq 1 dinar with a picture of a mediaeval Islamic coin
- Macedonia 50 denar 1996 with a picture of a Byzantine copper follis
- Netherlands Indies 1 gulden WWII period with picture of 1 gulden coin
- Venezuela 1 bolivar 1989 with picture of 1 bolivar coin

There are no doubt many others.
