By coincidence, I was looking through my very small banknote collection and came across a note, about 3 X 5, titled "Funt Reichmark."

I have it labeled "France," so assume it was printed during the Nazi occupation.

The number "5" is on the reverse side, but I can't find a date.

Any idea as to what this note is?

 :) :) :) :)

In 1938 Germany absorbed Austria into the Third Reich, all previously issued Austrian money was called in and redeemed for Reichsmarks. Austria had previously printed but not yet issued a 100 Schilling note in 1938 with a young Austrian woman holding an Edelweiss flower, this design impressed the powers that be in the Reichsbank enough that they selected the design for the 20 Reichsmark note issued the following year in 1939. This note circulated along side the 20 Reichsmarks note with Von Siemens on it P-181 up until 1948 when the Reichsmark was replaced with the Deutschmark.

In many ways this note symbolizes the rise of Germany from the ashes of WWII, with Europa and Taurus on the front of this note. This beautiful image exemplifies the rebirth of Germany and the hope for a new Europe.

Giesecke & Devrient is one of the premier printers of world banknotes, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries they pioneered intricate multicolour designs on banknotes:

Until the dissolution of the German Empire in 1918 following their defeat in WWI, Germany was actually an Empire with constituent kingdoms that made up the German Empire, with Prussia being the primary kingdom. But other kingdoms such as Bavaria were entities of their own within the German Empire, and were essentially self governing states within the Empire. As such they issued their own coins and banknotes over the denomination of 2 Marks and above. This banknote from Bavaria is a lovely example of a note printed by Giesecke und Devrient of Munich, a superior late 19th century and even now 21st century printer of world banknotes. During this time though, they were at their apex as far as printing technology and printed very lovely notes for many of the German states and numerous foreign countries, including many in Africa and Latin America.

John, you must have a wonderful banknote collection.
How many do you have?
(you don't have to answer that, if you don't want to).

Title: Re: Old German Banknotes
Post by: Nighthawk on April 10, 2010, 08:34:07 PM
Steve, I probably have about 2,500 to 3,000 different world banknotes in my collection. Someday I hope to sit down and count them, just to know exactly how many I do have. My coin collection is probably close to 10,000 or so coins from around the world.   :)

You make me feel like a newbie.
I only have about 100 notes, but then  I don't go out of my way to collect them.
My coin collection is nearly at 4000.

The Germans produced great banknotes.   I do not collect all of them but I do collect coins and banknotes from the NAZI era.

Barry, I am also big into the Third Reich stuff, coins, paper money, stamps, covers, postcards, etc.. The crown of my collection thus far has to be a genuine Luftwaffe armband that I purchased from a dealer about 2 years ago. I paid $70 for it, and it is in excellent condition. I also have a German bond from the Nazi era that I paid $80 for about 4 years ago, and it is in mint condition!   :)

Steve, is this piece of paper you show very small in size, like about 1-1/2" X 1" or so? If it is, it is probably a coupon from a bond. Using the Google translator, some phrases I typed in German came out something like this:  Six month interest rates payable; National Debt Office; Promisorry note; Bond of the German Empire.  I wish I knew German a little better. But I think it is some sort of bond coupon. Hope this helps.   :)

Sorry I do not look at paper and only saw the question today

It is a coupon of a bond of 100 000 Dmark ( row 1 number 6)
Bondseries A
The coupon is worth 2000 Dmark  as a sixmonthy interest payment due novembre 1st 1928
The coupon would be no longer valid if a corner had been cut off
The coupon validity expired 31 st decembre 1932
Issued by the State debt department 1 st dec 1922 Berlin
( 2 Ausgabe = second emission )

I presume the coupon was never collected ?
I also presume since this is coupon 6 and sixmonthly  the interest payments only started in
1926
So looks like 4% interest with delayed payment and someone missed the collection date

Hinterbruhl has only one Hostelet left
I did not realise it was in the Salzburg region which is now touristical
There is still an hotel called Radetzky in another village but that means nothing
since the Strauss composers wrote the very famous Radetzky march which is
played by the Wiener Philharmoniker Orchestra every new years concert . I think he
was a general .
