I have several questions about the U.S. Dollars.

Any information would be appreciated.

1.  Is the edge lettering going to be discontinued on the Presidential Dollar starting next year?

2.  Does the Sacagawea reverse change next year, and if so, what will the design be?

3.  Will fewer Sacagawea's be minted next year than previously thought?

4.  I read somewhere, and then forgot about it, that several Sacagawea Dollars went into space aboard the shuttle.  Anybody know what happened to them.  And, were they really made of gold?

Again, thanks for any answers.

The gold Sackies that flew in space were struck without the authorization of Congress so crap hit the fan after they landed. I think a couple went to huge museums (Smithsonian and another) and the rest are locked up at West Point or Fort Knox. There value is probably in the millions per coin so the government will set on them until they need the money desperately and then sell them (my guess).

I have heard and read various rumors concerning your other questions but have seen nothing set in stone as of yet so I can't reply based on any facts. Guess we will just wait and see?

Answer to question #3, I think so.
Answer to question #2, from what I've read I beleive the design will change, but to what, I don't know.

 Cheesy

Dear Coin Crusader 4/Global Moderator:

I will try to answer your questions  No.1 and 4

1.  Yes!  They will discontinue the edge lettering.   I am sure the U.S.Mint has to learn a lot for edge lettering from German Mint.   German mint is doing the edge lettering, very excellently.

4. Yes!  Only TWELVE 22 KARAT GOLD SACAGAWEA DOLLARS WERE MINTED AND TAKEN IN TO SPACE on July 23, 1999.    Please read my article in U.S.Coins on Sacagawea Dollars.

Kind regards
Sincerely
George/India

Dear Coin Crusader 42

Yes!   Surely, they will change the Reversrse Design, next year.  What will be introduced, not yet known.

Kind regards

Edge lettering to be discontinued? Who knows? First, edge lettering was part of the legislation, then a right wing backlash led to new legislation opposing such. However, new legislation for new reverse Sacs calls for edge lettering on those. It remains a mystery what will transpire.

The Sac reverses change beginning 2009, and will change year to year based on Native American accomplishments.

Sacs will only be issued by mint directly to collectors in 2007 and 2008, despite legislation calling for 25% of the dollar coin mintages (i.e., the Presidents) be composed of Sacs (see problem above). In 2009 legislation calls for Sacs to make up 20% of dollar mintage.

39 22-karat gold dollars were minted. The best 12 were sent on the shuttle and the others were melted. These coins were part of a US Mint booth during a recent coin show. The gold Sacs have a W mintmark, but were made in Philly, since the Mint thought they'd next sell W gold Sacs directly to the public. Same planchets as the 1/2 ounce gold bullion coins.
