1938 D over S Buffalo Nickel

Just picked this up at the show this morning. Rather slim pickings from the show. In addition to this I grabbed an 1896 5 centavos from Puerto Rico in EF. An AU 1864 Nova Scotia 1/2 Penny and a couple of Canadian Bank Tokens... Quebec and Montreal.

Actually it looks like the D is doubled over the S. What does that do to the value?

Quickly checking the Coneca site, I see there are a couple D/D/S as well as D/D/D/S rpms for 1938. The simple D/S looks pretty common if Heritage auctions are any indication. I'm seeing at least a D/D/S, and perhaps there's more going on?  Great find!

I was a bit disappointed when I got my 1938 Buffalo Nickel back from ANACS today. I am sure it is at least a DD over S, but it came back as follows...

I bought a 38 D/S a few months back as they are seldom seen in uncirculated condition in this neck of the woods. I would hope it would go at least MS-63 or better. Now my question, with me being an old fashioned coin collector. How in the world can a coin coffin manufacturer grade a coin MS-60 and then include the description of "Corroded?"  Seems to me they don't know what your coin really is or grading standards have changed somewhat over the last few years. To me that would be like getting a coin graded at PF-69 but "Dirty"?
Don't get me wrong I do like your buffalo nickel as they continue to be a favorite. It is the grading companies I have a HUGE problem with as they skirt around the basics in an effort to please those who need to be pleased and the rest of us get whatever they can dream up!

Guess it would be like a car salesman telling you this is a brand new car with a little rust or only slightly wrecked?

Sometimes I think the graders need to use a little COMMON SENSE and cut back a bit on the magnifiers. Shoot I can nit-pick the best proof to pieces given a chance!!!

I think it is ANACS policy to grade that way. They give you a grade for the actual wear, or lack thereof, on the design but nore any other problems like cleaning etc.
That is one of the things that people see as a reason to go with ANACS. They note the problem on the slab rather than just sending the coin back to you ungraded like PCGS and NGC do. Although I"ve heard that PCGS is supposed to stop doing that.
