Welcome to a stroll down memory lane... Looks a lot different, HUH?

Title: Interesting Finds From Circulation
Post by: CoinCrusader42 on October 06, 2007, 11:45:05 AM
This will be the fourth forum in which I have started this thread.

It has proven of interest in the other forums, and has had better than 40,000 hits in two different forums.

Perhaps the Knights and Knightesses will also find it of interest.

I'll start it off with a most interesting find today.

We all realize that the Presidential Dollar won't circulate.  However, one did today.

While receiving change at the photo section of our WalMart store, I was given a Jefferson Dollar!  BU.  D mint.

 :) :) :) :)

Every week or so, my Wife empties her purse of coin and I go through to see if there are any decent oddities.  Last night, I turned up a 1997 10 cent piece in good EF.  These are listed at around $60 in UNC.

Got a 1933 George V cent yesterday.  It stands out very easily since the reverse of all Canadian coins has been mostly the same since 1936.  That's my oldest Canadian find in circulation, but I once got a 1926 wheat cent in change, so that remains my oldest find from circulation.

My oldest Canadian in change is also a 1933 cent.  I come across GVI's from time to time, one about every month or so.  Just the other day I got a 1953 QEII at the P.O.  I just wish I could get the old 12 sided nickels  in change still.

Got a shiny Bermuda cent in change yesterday.  The pig where the maple leaves should be is what threw me off.

1945 GVI cent, only real good find in roll searches so far today.

dustin43160, Actually this is the fifth or sixth British coin I've found in the last few years.  Maybe tourists bring them back from the UK, or maybe people visiting here from England pass them off.

 :) :) :) :)

Title: Re: Interesting Finds From Circulation
Post by: scottishmoney on October 11, 2007, 06:42:04 PM
The most unusual British coin I have come across in circulation is the heptagonal 20 pence piece, masquerading as a nickel.  I have even gotten Aussie 5¢ masquerading as dimes though.

Yesterday I did the 2500 cent box thang again for the first time in months.  It steeeeuuuuunk.

CANADA
GVI
1945
1950
QEII
1961
1962 X 2
1964

USA
Wheats
1945
1951-D
1952-D

S- Mints
1969
1972
1973
1974 X 2

Far less wheats than the usual 10-12, but the couple of GVI cents helped since they are a bit tougher to find.  So now the rejects go back and I will get another box from another bank, hopefully better.

Title: Re: Interesting Finds From Circulation
Post by: scottishmoney on October 13, 2007, 07:24:33 PM
I went through another 2500 cent lot, this more disappointing than the one earlier in the week.

USA
Wheat
1947
1955-D

S-Mints
1969
1970 X 2
1972
1974

Canada
GVI
1943
1947

QEII

1959
1961
1963 X 2
1964

Last year I was going through these boxes up until this summer, I averaged anywhere from 10-14 wheats per box, some as early as 1910.  I had lots more early QEII Canadians too.  The craziest finds were German and French €.02 coins, Bermuda Cents, Bahamas etc.  Now it is not worth taking a couple of hours to check through these, maybe I will move back to nickels again.

I've found the reverse, twice actually.  (Ok, they were in rolls of Canadian dimes, but you get the hint! :) )  I believe the Aussie 10c is the same size as our quarter, or at least it's really close, but I have yet to find one of those in circulation.  Good thing as I have about 20+ of them already.

Interesting when you consider there are now only three Anzacs left:

Choules, Claude Stanley    01901-03-03 3 March 1901    106    British    Royal Navy    Joined the Royal Navy in 1916; subsequently emigrated to Australia in 1920 and served with Royal Australian Navy in the Second World War.[1][2]
Lucas, Sydney (Syd)    01900-09-21 21 September 1900    107    British    British Army – 1st Sherwood Foresters    Did not see action because he was still in training when the war ended. Moved to Australia in 1928 and served in the Australian Army in WWII.[3]
Ross, John Campbell    01899-03-11 11 March 1899    108    Australian    Australian Army    Wireless operator and last Australian digger.[4]

Old Dan I wouldn't bank on that one! Probably if the truth was known whoever had the darn thing looked at it and saw how butt ugly it was so they ran out and spent it! They look like play money to me and are nothing more than cheap renditions of the U.S. Mints Presidential medal program.

Now I would like to see some Sackies circulate but I hate to drive to Ecuador to see them!

scottishmoney, If you like the coin posted by tyjulie, it's been offered to you & as they're not meant to be in circulation, it's deemed to be a pretty 'good' find. Issue price was only $2, but in my opinion, it's worth having.

My kids always check the Coinstar machine at the grocery store, and yesterday was no exception.  2 pennies, 1 Euro cent (German), and a 1 Paise from India!

Title: Re: Interesting Finds From Circulation

The Coinstar machine is great.  I found two of the modern Japanese yen in it some years ago.  (http://dreamgarden.fraildream.net/Kitty/hyper.gif)

Then this year, I got a silver yen from the cashier in the Cafeteria.  Since I work for Toyota, somehow this didn't surprise me in the least.

In the 60,s, 70,s and 80,s I could bet you, almost at any time, that you had a 64 nickel in your pocket and win the bet. Literally unheard of striking of the 64 nickel. We had a coin shortage in the 60s which they blamed on collectors, which was far from the truth, so huge numbers of various coins were minted to catch up with the system! Who knows, that 64 you found may have been someones piggy bank all these years?

There are so many of these type of coins in circulation, I wonder if they were stolen at some time and the spend due to the person not knowing what they had.

I must say I am thinking of kids rather than adults.

It is a shame that good coins like these go into circulation therefor loseing there value to a collector.

Thanks,
Amazingly enough I had it for years, but never noticed the doubling, until I bought a portable 30x microscope.
At first I thought it may have been an over date, but I doubt it. :(

I really don't know what I have here.  It is roughly the same size and color as a U.S. dime, and I received it in change today.

I think it's Polish.

The obverse features an eagle, and the words Rzeczpospolita Polska  On the reverse:  20 Groszy.

Is it from Poland?  Anybody know?

This really was found in circulation -- but not by me, although it was given to me.

I have a couple of convenience store clerks who watch out for the unusual, because they know I'm a coin collector.

So, today I was given a coin from France.  I would guess it was passed off as a nickel.  It's about that size.

It really is a nice little coin.

France. 10 Centimes.  1992.  AU

I thought this tidbit of information might be of interest.

I started "Interesting Finds From Circulation" on two other forums.  Just out of curiosity, I checked on them today, and here's what I found.

Coin Talk -- 1,220 replies, 35,185 views
CCF -- 1,291 replies, 45,119 views

It's likely to be years before we reach those numbers, but who knows.

Finally received a Presidential dollar in change!  What?  You have to ask for them?  Anyway...it was actually my Husband that received it in change.  He brought it home to me...handed it to me and then...........as I was turning it over to see which Pres it is - I dropped it and it rolled under the stove!  So much for the condition now.  I've been sick with the flu and I guess that I couldn't even hold onto a coin!  Oh my!  Anywho...it's Mr. Jefferson which I didn't have until now.  Yippee! (ps:  Am feeling much better today)

Condition Fine.

Size of a quarter.

Went into a bank today and as usual, I looked at the tray of coins across the counter that the teller hands out in change. What the...? A silver rimmed coin in the quarter trough? I asked for it and got it....a 1944(p) silver quarter. Since silver is around $14.68/oz now (NY), it was nice to get $2.70 in silver for only 25c. ($14.68/oz equates to 10.8 X face value for a 90% silver U S A coin.)

1996 JFK Half Dollar, D, AU.

Seldom get Kennedy Half Dollars.

Wish they would get rid of the $1 bill, and I bet the Kennedys would start circulating again.  Well, at least the new dollars.

Only one they had.  I asked.

Funny thing though.  I remember as recently as a couple years ago, the bank always seemed to have several.  I just wasn't into IKE collecting.

You don't see them anymore, and that's why I'm happy I grabbed that one.

Good Old WalMart!!

Two Sacagaweas in change.

Both 2000.  One P mint and one D.

yes, got the rolls of nickles home, went thru them, one roll showed up with five nickles from the 1940's, all pretty fine shape, surprised to find very few of the 2004 and 2005  nickles anymore.   also, two near new and shiny canadian niks, nice find for me. ;D

Minnesota Statehood Quarter.

Two thing I thought were unusual.

First, it was BU.  Not a mark on it.

Secondly, it was a Philadelphia mint coin.

We seldom ever see P mint in Colorado, especially on new coins.

Title: Re: Interesting Finds From Circulation
Post by: scottishmoney on February 26, 2008, 09:02:35 PM
I searched through 7 $25.00 boxes of cents, with the cooperation and even
some encouragement from several of my local banks tellers over the last 4
days.  Cent boxes are getting a bit hard to find now, I do know I have
competition for them, so now you have to get in good with the tellers(one of
them collects coins, so I sell her goodies at face to save stuff for me)

So for 4 days of sifting through cents I came up with the following:

      USA
      Wheats
      1916-D
      1917-D
      1920
      1924
      1932-D
      1935-S
      1936
      1937
      1941
      1942 X2
      1942-D
      1944 X 2
      1945 X 3
      1945-D X 3
      1946 X 4
      1946-D X 3
      1947-D
      1948
      1948-S
      1950-D X 3
      1951-D X 3
      1952-D X 2
      1952-D  X 2
      1952-S
      1953
      1953-D X 4
      1954-D
      1955 X 2
      1955-D X 2
      1956-D X 6
      1957-D X 6
      1958 X 2
      1958-D

      S Mints
      1969-S X 3
      1970-S X 7
      1971-D X 2
      1972-D X 2
      1974-S X 7

1973 Lincoln cent that appears to be struck in another metal, not
magnetic, and if it is plated it was skillfully done, because it appears to
have original mint lustre still.

6 cupronickel Roosevelt dimes masquerading as cents in hand rolled
rolls.

      CANADA
      George VI
      1940
      1941
      1942
      1945 X 2

      Elizabeth II YH
      1956
      1957 X 2
      1958
      1959 X 2
      1960 X 2
      1961 X 2
      1962 X 4
      1963 X 8
      1964 X 22

      Elizabeth II 1967 Commem
      1967 X 3

      Errors
      1976 with approximately 10% clip at 1:00 o'clock.

      FRANCE
      2 €urocent dated 1999

On Saturday I returned the Zincolns to the bank coin machine, and the
total payback came to something like $36.72 so the teller gave me the 72¢ in
change.  This would become the best find of all, a 1945 Washington quarter,
in silver of course.  I asked if she had anymore like it but alas no.

2008 Canada 5¢ coin.  Still no 2008 USA coins.  Since Canada helps our local economy more than the USA, and we get so much of their coinage, I think we need to become part of Canada, then my state will not get forgotten and left out of the electoral process.

I don't suppose this qualifies, but it is interesting, and makes one wonder where it game from.

A 1991 Lincoln Cent --made of plastic!!

A game piece?

Picked it up in a parking lot and couldn't tell it wasn't a real penny until I touched it.

It's probably play money or prop money. I just took six numbers off that voucher and played them in the lotto. Payout tonight is  38 million for a $3 ticket.

Two weeks ago I found three dollar bills folded up on the side walk. I took two numbers off of each bill and played them in the lotto and paid for it with the same bills.

The threes keep coming although now they are declining now from dollars to cents--probably not a good sign.  ???

Steve, your Fiji coin looks nearly perfect!

Within recent days I have found seven pennies in three different locations, and a plastic penny (Lincoln Cent) when I went to the landfill.

The plastic coin is probably play money from a kid's game (as longnine suggests), but the other pennies just indicate the Lincoln Cent is becoming more and more worthless to Americans.

The right place at the right time........
About a yr ago I went into a bank to deposit some of our coin club's money, and of course I mentioned coins. The teller said an elderly lady just came in with a bag of pennies to be deposited and she (the teller) saw some 'funny pennies' in the bag the lady brough in. The teller said she ran them through the counting machine. I asked if I could go through the cloth bag on the counting machine and she said, "Why don't you come back in an hour....I'll go through them."

An hour passed and I approached the counter......there she was, laying on the carpet behind the counter picking out those 'funny pennies'. In the end, she presented me with 110 Wheat pennies. At home, I went through them.....there were a few good ones (mint marked 20s and 30s) but nothing exciting. The next day I went in and presented her with a single long stemmed red rose and thanked her again. BOY, did she blush.

Discovered in my pocket.  May have come from WalMart.

Italy, Quarter size.  50 Lira  1964  AU.

Not sure who or what is depicted on the obverse.

Reverse has a scantily clad gentleman banging away, forging something made of medal.

Can anybody help?

Helvetica or Helvetia indicates Switzerland.  The Helvetians, just like their Letzebuergish brethren have their own languages, which curiously enough are minority languages in both Switzerland and Luxembourg, the primary languages being either French or German, and some Italian in Switzerland.

This find wasn't mine, but I guess I was responsible for it.

I have never used one of the coin-counting machines until recently.  Our credit union installed one, and it's free for members to use.

So, my grandson Daniel wanted to put some coins in his savings account and I took him to the credit union.

I remembered that a member had posted that one should check the reject tray, so I had Daniel do it.  He came out with a foreign coin and a war nickel.  He put the coins in his pocket to add to his collection, and I never did look closely to see what the "foreign" coin was.

But, I'll always be sure and check that reject tray.

My favourite teller saved some old $1 and $2 notes for me.  They're not worth much more than face, but since they aren't in circulation, I consider it a good find.  One of the $1 notes is a 1954 (sorry, not the devil's head variety), so that's a first for me.  Not bad considering they didn't cost me anything extra.

No big deal, but I keep our kids birth year coins, to give to them, and 1967 is when our oldest son was born.

As I put the quarter aside, I noticed the edge was smooth.  That suggests it spent some time in Reno or Las Vegas going through slot machines.

I found a 1996 Panama Centisimo--exactly same size/weight as our Cu/Zn Lincoln cents.
I believe this one was struck by the RCM on the same stock used on those Canada Cu/Zn cents.

Even with my poor eyesight, this coin looks like it's from The Netherlands.  1 Cent.  1919.  Not sure what beast is on the obverse.  Lion?  Dragon?  Anyone help?

Found on the floor and given to me by my wife.  Neither of us have any idea where it came from.

The Dutch coat of arms (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coat_of_arms_of_the_Netherlands) shows a crowned lion holding a sword and clutch of arrows.

More strarge stuff turning up tonight.

Evidentally from a Mexico trip.  Dug down deep in an old camera bag, and here's what I found.

6 20 Veinte Peso Notes, Pristine except for one fold down the middle, 50 Cincuenta Pesos Note, Perfect except for fold down the middle.

Also BU Texas Quarter, P. AU. I can see no marks on it.

I have a second old camera bag I'll look through tomorrow.

Went to the bank today after work and picked up $100.00 in halves. Found: 1964 (1), 1967 (1), 1968-D (4), 1969-D (1). The '67 is AU+, the rest average circulated, but decent! ;D

I can't claim these as personal finds, but they are really something.

I was in my favorite convenience store today, and the clerk showed me two coins she had pulled from the cash register.  She found them a couple days apart.

Both appeared to be almost uncirculated.  A 1943-S Mercury Dime, and a 1935-D Buffalo Nickel.

Do you suppose things are becoming so financially tough that people would spend coins like that?

No great and stunning finds, but somewhat unusual.

Clad JFK Dollar (1976) with minimal wear, and a Sacagawea Dollar, 2000, with very little wear.  Still shiny.

I think it would be great for coins such as these to start circulating.  Who knows, maybe with the next administration, we'll finally get rid of the $1 bill, and we'll see a huge change in the kind of money we carry around.

The two aforementioned coins came in change from a Safeway Supermarket.

Don't you have a Randalls nearby?  HEB was cheap, but selection pretty slim on items though.  Randalls had pretty outrageous prices, but had some selection at least in their "premium" stores in Houston.

Nope, no Randalls.  I think the only other grocery store we've got in town is a Fiesta food mart?  Not the sort of store I'd want to shop in.  It looks dirty. :(

The only other game in town, Albertson's, folded up and moved back north about eight years ago.  I was working there part time, as a second job.  I really liked shopping there.

In a way you're absolutely right, triggersmob.  I worked in fast food, movie theatres, and grocery stores for several years when in High School and in college.  I miss terribly the opportunity to go through rolls of coins, and people's pocket change without anyone caring at all.  But, I'm not giving up my career to go back into that, no matter how intriguing the coins may be. ;)  I can afford to buy better ones!

There were Fiestas in Houston, but they were usually in Hispanic neighbourhoods, but I shopped in one of them because it was right near where I worked.  It was a nice clean store, but not all of them were.  I liked the selection of Latin American vittles there.

Randalls tend to be in ritzy areas, okay, I admit, I lived in Kingwood, which is a fairly pricey area of Houston.  They had good selections of food, but their prices were up the bottom and out the ears.  Most of the time we were HEB shoppers.  We had to drive down to Humble(pronounced Umble) or up to Porter to pay the prices we were willing to pay since we are cheap Scots.

If and when we ever live in Texas again there is no desire on my part to ever live in Houston again.  I could very easily move to Marshall or Tyler, or out in your part of the country!  Texas is just such a beautiful state, I sure miss Spring there and the Indian Paintbrush and Bluebonnets.

Now you can afford to go to the bank like I do, and buy boxes of cents, nickels etc. and go through them for the goodies ;D  Even though I can afford fairly pricey coins, nothing beats finding a nice 1909 VDB in a roll like I did last week.  That is more fun than gambling or blowing $1K on a coin.

I don't think I could ever permanently leave Texas.  It's home, and that's how it will stay.  From the dusty desert and mountains out west, to the gorgeous pine trees and bayous of the east, the hill country in the middle and the coastal plains of the gulf.  Can't say as I'm all that fond of the panhandle though. Flat, dusty place.  I prefer it down here. ;D

Scottish, you sure need to visit the Wimberley area.

I miss the biweekly coin delivery at the restaurant.  For five years, I was a manager, and could lock myself in the office and go through the safe all I wanted.  You're absolutely right about the thrill of the chase, and the find!  However, I just can't make myself be interested in US coins.  The new ones are just too familiar, and spendable ontop of that; the old ones are just too bloody expensive.  What I liked best was pulling silver dimes or quarters out of the rolls, of when someone would sneak a foreign coin in the change, and the really rare occasion when someone would spend an old bill for a Whopper at Burger King. :D  "Redeemable in Gold" You just don't see phrases like that these days.

Very nice notes, Miss Kitty! Some years ago, my daughter and I were searching thru rolls of cents, and found a 1924-D Lincoln cent, F-VF, with a ROTATED REVERSE! The reverse was rotated clockwise to about the 2 o'clock position. I still have that coin in my collection. Another time we found an 1858 FLYING EAGLE cent in GOOD condition! How 'bout that! Tracy, you sent me an email on Thur about our trade, but there were no pic's attached to your email. I'd still like to trade! ;)

Actually the roll searches have produced coins from France, Germany, Bahamas, Bermuda and of course Canada.  The 2€urocent coins double as cents here, but they are worth about 3¢ in our money so a bonus!

Yes, I have found Bahamas, Great Britain, Bermuda, Euro coins, etc, in rolls. One of my best finds I think was a solid roll of 1967 Kennedy half dollars, uncirculated. The edges were still sharp to the touch! :)

It is not a circulatin issue and only 126,000 minted.
It's one I didn't have.

I think the main reason I find so many strange coins is that I carefully look at EVERYTHING in my pocket.

Two finds today.  An Alaska Quarter -- the first other than from out of a bank roll, and, a Guatemala 1 centavo, 1984.  Probably passed off as a U.S. cent.

For those of us lees-educated in Aussie errors, is the wave found on the #2? Or is it actually on the water lines or something else?

Title: Re: Interesting Finds From Circulation

The wave is on the baseline of the 2 & is reflected in the water line directly above it, adjacent to the stem of the 2.  Most 1966 20¢ have a level baseline.

1966 Wavy 2's are one of the key decimal varieties in Australia. Highly collectible.

Title: Re: Interesting Finds From Circulation
Post by: ElleKitty on September 25, 2008, 04:37:58 AM
For those less educated, the wavy line is actually the top edge of the bottom of the number 2:

The wave is on the top of the base of the 2 and the wave above.  Ordinarily, the 'top' of the base of the 2 is as flat as the 'bottom' of the 2 and there is no 'wave' on the wave above.

Now that I have confused everyone. perhaps I might simply post a comparison photograph.   :D  I'll do that in the next coupla days.

Title: Re: Interesting Finds From Circulation
Post by: triggersmob on September 25, 2008, 05:30:46 PM
Let's try to un-confuse you.

The coin on the left is the common type. Notice on top of the horizontal section of the number 2, that the line is stright.
The coin on the right is the wavy type. The top of the horizontal section of the 2, now has a slight wave in it, as does the line above it.

Hope this helps.

Most likely our rarest decimal coin. The 2000 $1 mule is rare as well, but you can usually find one for sale if you look, not so the wavy. And very, very hard to find in high grade.

I got a 1994D quarter today with a reverse counter-punch. It looks like a slithering snake to me so I'm going to call it the Goldman quarter.  :D But whatever it is, it's definitely a counter punch--bent pretty good and an obverse bulge.

I finally got something at a good price at 7-Eleven.

I guess it's just a sign of the times.

I stopped in to my convenience store yesterday and visited with the clerks about coins.  I was told that a customer had just been there and spent $6 worth of silver coins.  They told him they were worth more than current coins, but it didn't matter to him.  The coins consisted of two JFK Half Dollars (1964. 1965), and all the rest were quarters -- mainly from the 1940's.

Our wonderful economy seems to be taking its toll on the working person.

I recently purchased a couple rolls of the Hawaii Quarter from one of our banks, but had not seen it in circulation.

That changed today when I got a couple of them in change.

I think they are really beautiful.  May rank in my "Top 5" for the Statehood Quarter series.

That leaves only one circulating coin I have not seen this year.  The 2008 Nickel.  They don't seem to exist in Colorado.  None at the banks or credit union.  Clerks I have talked with haven't seen them either.  Strange.

More school lunch money finds this morning, asked the teacher that handles the fundage if I could inspect it:

1955 Netherlands 5 Cent - masquerading as a cent apparently
1990 Czechoslovakian 50 Haleru masquerading as a nickel apparently
1943-D cent - a steelie again!
1949 Nickel
1969-S nickel
and finally a 1970-S nickel.

Then she said that she has actually refused other buffalo nickels, silver coins etc. that she saw coming through because she thought they were worth more than they were spending them for.

Interesting coin found in pocket change today.

1988 D Lincoln Cent, BU.

Fingerprint unfortunately.

One rim is sharply defined while on the other edge, the rim can barely be seen.

I guss this would be considered an error.  Any ideas what caused it?

I just had a real thrill, but it didn't last long.

Cleaning out a dresser drawer, I found a Mercury dime.  No idea where it came from.

It was maybe AG, and had cut marks on it.  Also, an interesting date --1916!

Unfortunately, I couldn't find a mint mark.

Went to the fruit and veg shop today and noticed a couple of coins sitting on the till.
On closer inspection I could see they were foreign. I offered to buy them, if no one else was
wanting them, but the cashier checked with the boss and then gave them to me.
Obviously been passed off as a 20c and 5c pieces.

Spanish 25 Pesetas and Thai 1 Baht.

I'm nearly done working on my US coins, just a few loose ones to enter in my spreadsheet.
My main problem is I keep finding coins in safe places, where I've stashed them & promptly forgotten them.  ::)

I have a Whitman Canadian Cent folder.  Found it down deep in a storage container.  The excitement I felt years ago for Canadian coins started to come back with the discovery of the 1940 penny.

My thought at this time is that I will work on the folder in partnership with the two grandkids who are also members of KOTCT.

So, I would be most interested in trading with Nighthawk, or any member who has access to Canadian cents.  If trades aren't available, I would appreciate the opportunity to buy some.

I looked at the folder and found it contained only five coins, so we are starting from scratch.

I started to collect U S coins many snows ago. Then, living in Illinois at the time, an aunt gave me some unc Canadian coinage 2x (1c-25c) that she picked up at the Canadian mint (in the 1930s). I started collecting the Canadian along with my U S coins. Sure enough, some collecting buddies used to say, "Why do you want to collect THAT stuff?" And lo these many decades, I believe it is evident now.

Today, while working at the local hospital gift shop, I sorted through about $300 worth of nickels, dimes, and quarters.

I didn't find anything fabulous, but did find some interesting coins, including:

Three BU Westward Movement nickels
Date of birth coins of our kids (1967, 1971, 1973)
Four D.C. Quarters
One Puerto Rico Quarter
Four Bi-Centennial Quarters
Three Delaware Quarters, BU

1948 Nickel, F condition
1952 Nickel
12 Westward Movement Nickels
One Tyler Dollar

Yesterday was my day to work at our hospital gift shop.  During free time I looked through a bunch of quarters.

I found Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, Guam, and Samoa -- all BU.

Of interest, I found many 1999 quarters, especially Delaware, in BU.  Conclusion:  The economy is tough on people, and the saved quarters are being spent.

I am guilty also.  Took about 100 saved quarters and put them in my "vacation bottle" in preparation for a little trek later this month.

Today I got a bag of aussie 10 cent coins , only to find 12 US quarters ranging from 1967 to 2001. Not a bad find 1/2 way around the world. 8)

Way to go tiddy, quite a bit of profit too!  ;D  :D  ;)

If I had 25¢ for every 10¢ I ever had, I'd almost be rich!  ::)  8)  :o  ;D

Not from circulation, but I did find a small bag of Kennedy Half Dollars last night.

All either AU or BU.  Mainly 1970's and 1990's.

Lots of 1967, 1971, and 1973 coins --our kids' birth years.  Guess I;ll give them to the kids this Christmas.

 :) :) :) :)

Presidential Dollars don't circulate much, so I was happy to get a John Tyler in change at WalMart.

1954 Roosevelt Dime.

Really banged up.  No numismatic value.

Found in my pocket.  No idea which store it might have come from.

1996 - P Kennedy Half Dollar.  B.U.

Real mystery.  Have been getting them from retail stores, convenience stores. and restaurants.

Each is as nice as the day in came from the mint.

Maybe a ploy by the Government to start circulating Half Dollars?

 :) :) :D :D :) :) :D :D

I found a zinc cent and clad dime planchet along with some mystery tokens in a lot of rejected change from a cashiers till. The cent planchet is slightly bent. I'm wondering most about the strange token with a crude regal portrait on it. The edge is scalloped and appears modern, but the design is virtually barbaric. Is this some sort of pirate treasure play money? And is the brass token Vietnam era from Sega in Japan, or from Sunshine Mint.
Thanx for your replies.

Found a 2001 Queensland "Centenary of Federation" 20 cent, in the till at work.

Barely a mark on it, for it's age, I think it would pass as a aUNC.

Steve, You are a much better "coin finder" than I.

I haven't worked at the hospital gift shop for sever weeks.  Maybe when I get back to volunteering I'll have better luck.

I only get to work on the counter at work on a Sunday. During the week I work on the phones.
So on Sunday I go to work half an hour early, just to check all the coins.

When I was buying a bottle of pop for my son, my change came back and I heard an unfamiliar sound in the ringing of the coins as the cashier handed them to me.  I thought, "Oh great a stupid Canadian quarter", but I looked down and saw Washington staring at me - a 1963 quarter - in silver.
