One Penny

In the World of Australian coins this is probably no great one but...can someone explain to me why a Penny is/was 27MM?? Oh and is it Copper?  Thanks!

Aussie coins followed suit from the British Pennies. Composition is bronze, size is 25.5mm.

Thanks Nevol!  I never was very good at reading a "ruler", especially the MM's!  Oh, you know Americans, inches, etc. and heaven forbid Metrics of any kind (almost).

I love the Big penny from Australia, I am working on a set of them now and really enjoy them, I just received about 30 of the 1/2 penny coins from a friend in Australia and now I will be working on filling the empty spots between them.

I like them too madspec!  A Penny use to go a lot further than it does now.

The Reverse is clear, uncluttered and almost looks like a token (if one didn't know better ofcourse).

Good choice for your collection.

I love the Australian large penny as well as the English large penny.

I have a nice collection of the English coins and hope one day to start collecting the Aussie pennies.

I like my Aussie pennies too. I need 3 more to complete a set of one from each year. However I don't see me ever acquiring a 1930.

I think you guys should list the years you still need, so we can help you, if we have any spares.

1919 with dot above  (rare, expensive)

1930 (like I'll ever get this one.)

I could use a replacement 1921, and my poor old boy is turning green.

*grins*  Barry, I'll be surprised if anyone has any of those lying about as spares.  I've found many of those coins several times, hiding out in dealer's cases. The problem is I've seen pricetags as high as $300 for them.  I would suppose that I've hit that place in my collection where I'm getting the harder, rarer coins.

Dang!  I picked up that "Big Penny" on a lark thinking that I would start/continue with a collection of them.  I didn't realize that the price tags got that high!  This has been an enlightening post.  Thanks!

I currently have only one, and it was a gift.

If I ever do get around to collecting them, there obviously will be some empty spaces in my album.

I have been so busy working with my 20 and 50 Cent Piece collection in Dansco Albums, I moved most all other Australian coins to a plastic storage box.

Looking through the box, I find that you are correct.  I have a total of eight, not counting one I have on display.

I have my Aussie coins everywhere -- in three Dansco Albums, in the storage box, a handful in my safety deposit box, and several on display (including some you sent me) on a shelf in my office.

Now that the baseball playoffs are over, and tonight I just completed the week's sports section for the newspaper, I plan on working very hard on my Australian collections.  I plan to go to my coin store tomorrow and see if they have any additional Dansco Albums for Australian denominations, and then when I get home I intend to enjoy myself by sorting through my Australian coins and adding many to my albums.
