I bought some eggs at work today, but I forgot to bring them home.
So I had to go to the shops and buy more.
I put the change in my pocket without looking at it and then when I got home I checked it.
What a surprise, I had been given a dollar coin that I haven't even seen before and in pretty good condition too.
Here it is...

Any comments about value and mintages  be appreciated , thank you.

Steve, or someone, A little history lesson please.

I am very familiar with the song "Waltzing Matilda."  Is the gentleman featured on the coin the man who wrote the song?  Also, what is the song's significance?  Is it the "National Song" of Australia?

Thanks for any information.

G'day Gary,
Waltzing Matlida is a song about a 'swagman', roughly equal to your American 'hobo's'.

To be 'waltzing matilda' was to carry your worldly goods on your back and go trudging about the country looking for work, a feed or a hand-out when you were down in your luck, especially during the great depression  around the 1890-1900 period.
The pack you carried your possessions in was known as 'Matilda'.
The image on the coin is a stylized image of a swagman and the roll on his back is a blanket wrapped around his possessions, a Matilda.

The song is the unofficial National Anthem of us Aussies. It first became nationally popular during the First World War.
The coin was issued to celebrate to one hundredth anniversary of the song.

Andrew Barton (Banjo) Paterson (1864-1941) is a very popular poet and author of short stories. His most famous other poem is 'The Man from Snowy River'
He was also a war correspondent.
Hopes this helps a bit.
