Hi there,
I received 2 coins from Sweden, dedicated to Royal Wedding there, just a few facts:
Princess Victoria's wedding in June, 19 was  a historical event in Sweden. It is the first time a female heir to the throne has gotten married.

In its history, Sweden has only been ruled by three queens. The last time there was a queen on the throne was almost 300 years ago.

Queen Margaret ruled Sweden between 1389 and 1396 and Queen Christina between 1632 and 1654. The last reigning queen, Ulrika Eleonora, ruled Sweden between 1718 and 1720.

The Central Bank of Sweden  issued an official collector coin in honour of Victoria and Daniel Westling's wedding. The silver coin is worth 300 Swedish Crowns and the gold coin is worth 4,000 Swedish Crowns.

Value   4,000 Crowns
Medal   gold 900/1000
Weight   12.00 g

8  Worldwide Coins & Bank Notes / European Coins / Christmas coins from Latvia on: January 01, 2010, 11:03:50 PM
Hi there and Happy New Year!
I got for latvia 2 new coins, which i want to share with you:

Christmas tree
Face value: 1 lats
Weight: 22.00 g, diameter: 35.00 mm
Metal: silver of .925 fineness, quality: proof
Struck in 2009 by Koninklijke Nederlandse Munt (the Netherlands)
Obverse
A man carrying a small fir-tree, a squirrel and a shining moon are in the centre of the coin. The common logo of the "European Heritage", the commemorative coin programme of the European Union, together with the inscription ZIEMASSVĒTKU EGLĪTEI 500 (500th Anniversary of Christmas Tree) are arranged in a semicircle on the left above. The numeral 1 and the inscription LATS are placed at the bottom part of the coin.

Reverse
Mummers in traditional masks are depicted in the centre of the coin; the year 2009, arranged in a semicircle, is inscribed at the bottom on the right-hand side.

But where does the Christmas tree tradition come from? After all, the palm frond is associated with Christ's native land. It is St. Francis of Assisi who apparently made a Nativity scene in a forest in 1222 and put lighted candles in the branches of nearby fir trees. The first ever Christmas tree in Riga, adorned with flowers, appeared at a Christmas season street carnival organised by the Blackhead brotherhood and was burnt in 1510 before Shrove Tuesday. Saying good-bye to the current year and seeing in the new one in Latvia has elements of both pagan Latvian and Christian traditions. The old solstice rituals with their masquerades have also centred around the fir tree whereas in Christianity this tree symbolises the tree of knowledge in the Garden of Eden and Christ's gift of eternal life, but the lit candles in the tree are a reflection of the light Christ brought to the world of darkness.

In the Christian world, the Christmas tree tradition first spread in the German lands: as early as the beginning of the 17th century it was a custom to bring home a fir tree at Christmas and decorate it with paper roses and apples. Only in the 19th century this tradition took hold in Great Britain and afterwards in the United States and elsewhere.

To many Christmas tree is something more than just a ritual object or a decoration: it is a symbol of vitality and rebirth, of uniting spiritual energy, of peace and brotherly love. These same ideas have motivated the Bank of Latvia to issue a special coin honouring the Christmas tree.

Coin of Water
Face value: 1 lats
Weight: 26.00 g; area measurement: 32.00 x 32.00 mm; shape: square
Metal: silver of .925 fineness; quality: proof
Struck in 2009 by Rahapaja Oy (Finland)
Obverse
In the centre, a path of a drop of water begins from the inscription H2O against a background of drops of water in the lower part of the coin. The inscription LATVIJAS REPUBLIKA is placed along the lower part of the left upper side of the coin, and the year MMIX (2009 in Roman numerals) is featured along the lower part of the right upper side of the coin.

Reverse
A water crystal is depicted in the centre of the coin, with the inscription 1 LATS placed along the lower part of the right lower side of the coin.

Nobody know it now. Latvia, like all Baltic States, have a bad economical days right now and to join a euro, Latvia must fill a criteria for inflation and etc. Today is imopissible to fill these criteria.  Angry
Estonian Bank hopes to join a euro on January 1, 2011. but who knows...

Here is a second coin:
Lucky coin:
Face value: 1 lats
Weight: 22.00 g, diameter: 35.00 mm
Metal: silver of .925 fineness, quality: proof
Struck in 2008 by Rahapaja Oy (Finland)
Chimney-sweeps are always smiling and cheerful, for they are aware that people are glad to see them - even if their chimney does not need sweeping or there is no chimney at all. This is because chimney-sweeps are believed to bring good luck. When people unexpectedly see a chimney-sweep walking down the street, they think of a wish and rub a black button for all their yearnings and desires to come true. Now and then, chimney-sweeps are even invited to weddings - as an assurance that the new family will be blessed with love, harmony, prosperity, and a flock of healthy children.

Enjoy,
Marek

13  Worldwide Coins & Bank Notes / European Coins / Funny coins from Latvia on: August 16, 2009, 02:01:57 PM
Hi there,
I got from Latvia 2 new 1 lat commemoratives with a funny design.
The Pigelet
Face value: 1 lats.
Weight: 20.00 g, diameter: 34.00 mm.
Metal: silver of .925 fineness, quality: proof.
Struck in 2009 by Rahapaja Oy (Finland).
The coin was designed using the drawing by Emilija Adumane and modelled by Ligita Franckevica.
Reverse
The central motif is a drawing by Emīlija Adumāne, a six-year old girl from Riga. Her drawing of the 1 lats ("lac" in her spelling) coin features a pig, the symbol of welfare, generosity and cheer.

The perception of a child has the purity of fresh spring that has not been clouded by any adult impressions. In 2008, the Bank of Latvia invited children from all over Latvia to the contest of drawings entitled "My Dream Coin". Over four thousand young coin designers took part. Emilija Adumane, a six-year old girl from Riga, managed to win the tough competition with her drawing of the 1 lats ("lac" in her spelling) coin featuring a pig, the symbol of welfare, generosity and cheer, which is among Latvians' favourite archetypes.

In Latvian folklore, the pig has been a regular companion of humans since time immemorial, a curious embodiment of peacefulness and well-being. Of the swine characters in books, movies and animation, the three little pigs are perhaps the most popular; yet Piglet, Winnie-the-Pooh's closest companion, the wise Babe from the eponymous Australian film, and the protagonist from Arnolds Burovs' animation film Sisidra or Pig is Pig's Friend are also much loved. Far from complete, this gallery of pink-coloured fictional characters all have valuable life lessons for kids.

15  Worldwide Coins & Bank Notes / European Coins / Re: New Belarus 20 rouble silver coin on: August 07, 2009, 01:28:34 PM
Hi Terry,
I don't know mintage for that coin. Belarus coins regular mintage is very different from 3000 pcs to 30000 and more.
I payd for that coin 40 euros. I got it thru Lithuanian coin seller and inside a 40 euros is also a sending from Lithuania to Estonia.
If to be honest, Belarus coins are very madly overprized, but in another hand, they are hard to get and maybe worth that mad price  Roll Eyes
A few more pics from my Belarus collection:

Greeting from Estonia,

Marek
